2020年春节之际，新冠肺炎疫情突如其来。湖北沦陷为重灾区。42000多名医务工作者从全国各地紧急驰援湖北，成为阻击疫情的主力军。由于防护需要，他们都戴着口罩和护目镜。为了铭记白衣天使白衣执甲、逆行出征、救死扶伤的英雄形象，中央指导组宣传组策划并发起了“影像记录工程”：为每一个驰援湖北的医护人员拍一张摘下口罩瞬间的肖像。2月21日，中国摄影家协会主席、《人民日报》摄影记者李舸带领摄影团队抵达武汉，奋战40多天，终于在武汉解封前拍摄完成42000多张肖像照片。这些照片撼人心魄，每一个面孔，都折射医者仁心，每一个眼神，都闪耀人性光辉，每一张肖像，都将个人逆行与中国战“役”定格为永恒的瞬间，成为2020年春14亿中国人的集体记忆。42000多张照片彰显了人间大爱、民族精神和中国力量，成为载入史册的国家影像档案。
纪录片《见证》采用跟踪记录的拍摄的形式，将第一人称旁白、照片呈现、视频倾诉、现场讲述有机融合成多元而完整的叙事结构，真实地再现“肖像记录工程”的诞生过程以及由此折射出撼人心魄、刻骨铭心的中国战“役”那些人，那些事。
Around the Chinese New Year in 2020, COVID-19 suddenly emerged. Hubei Province was the worst-hit area. More than 42,000 medical workers rushed to Hubei from all over the country and became the main force in the fight against the epidemic. They all wore face masks and goggles for protection. In order to remember the heroic image of those angels in white who were entrusted with a mission at a critical and difficult moment to fight against the epidemic and save lives, the Propaganda Group of the Central Guidance Group planned and launched the “Image Recording Project”: taking a portrait of every medical worker who rushed to support Hubei at the moment when they took off their masks. On February 21, Li Ge, Chairman of China Photographers Association and photographer of People's Daily, led a photography team to Wuhan, where they fought for more than 40 days and finally took more than 42,000 portrait photos before Wuhan was unlocked. These photos are breathtaking, in which every face reflects the benevolence of doctors, every look shines with the brilliance of human nature, and every portrait frames the individual countermarching and China's fight against the COVID-19 epidemic as an eternal moment, becoming a collective memory of 1.4 billion Chinese people in the spring of 2020. More than 42,000 photos highlight human love, national spirit and China's strength, becoming national video archives which will be remembered long in the history.
The documentary Witness is filmed in the form of tracking and recording, which organically integrates the first-person narration, photo presentation, video talk and live narration into a diverse and complete narrative structure, truly reproducing the birth process of the “Portrait Recording Project” and thus reflecting the shocking and unforgettable people and things in China's fight against the COVID-19 epidemic.
